Description

This brooding Shiraz is crafted from a parcel of Shiraz planted in 1929, and serves as a wine that allows winemaker Alex Head to show off all the reasons we love Barossan Shiraz.

Named after the Wilton Hill property it hails from, this wine serves to be the essence of the vineyard in a bottle. It's bold and intense, with lifted aromatics from the 100% whole bunches used drawing you in with purple floral aromatics.

Earth, spice, dark chocolate and grippy tannin meet with a kiss of oaky vanilla. It's best years are still ahead of it and will continue to reward with time.

95 Points - "Intense purple colour here. Blackberry pastille, spice, fair bit of perfume, panforte, some earthiness. Medium to full-bodied, very dense and dark, lots of dark chocolate and spice, grain and grip to tannin, a little earthy, bold flavour, kind of dark and brooding, but still fresh and more than a little exotic. Some creamy vanilla oak and sooty tannin comes through in the aftertaste. Very good. Needs a little time in bottle, for sure." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

97 Points - "Wilton Hill is the flagship wine from Alex Head, a single-vineyard offering from the 90yo shiraz vines at 500m elevation in the range above Flaxman Valley. The colour is a saturated red purple, giving a hint of the intensity to come. Dark and black fruit of impressive density abound, cut deeply with spice and earth. It's a wonderfully expressive wine, both of latent fruit power and of site. The balance is pitch perfect, with ample tannin and mineral-like acid support. Very impressive." - Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion)

96 Points - "Very deep, glass-staining purple/red colour, with aromas that are very rich and sumptuous, chocolaty and vanillan, with glimpses of spices, the palate full-bodied and densly textured, fleshy and decadently concentrated. Luscious flavour, lavish use of oak but not domineering or harsh. The tannins are super-abundant and supple. A lovely wine, which will only get better with time and deserves cellaring." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

‘Wilton’ was an old town in Flaxman Valley and the vineyard was planted on the hill above the town, hence the property name. The property covers 250 acres. It was originally part of the largest land-holding within Flaxman Valley, of approximately 4000 acres, by the Pohlner family who were original 1852 settlers. The current owners are the Mattschoss Family, 6th generation farmers of the Barossa.

Head Wines

Alex Head has had what you might call a meteoric rise through the Australian wine industry. In his short career as a producer he has been heralded as one of the best Young Gun Winemakers, not only in the Barossa but the whole country.

With no formal training as a winemaker, the purity and balance inherent in the wines are amazing.

Alex has a passion for the old vineyards that populate the Barossa. With a keen eye for a good site, Alex has put together a formidable portfolio of vineyards which produce simply outstanding renditions of Shiraz and Grenache year-in, year-out. These are some of the most exciting wines in the Barossa.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
