Description

Abel Gibson has a rare feel for the dark art of skin contact white winemaking. His instincts and attention to detail yield wines of extraordinary and rare power and precision and longevity.

Here is a rare look at an aged museum release of his iconic Quomodo blend. We have just 24 bottles available and consider ourselves exceptionally fortunate to even have those to offer.

Quomodo is built around a core of intense Eden Valley Riesling. With Riesling as the spine and small inputs from deftly handled Semillon and Muscat adding aromatic highlights and layers of texture, this sits at the top of the pile of Australian amber wines.

Indeed, Mike Bennie upon its initial release went so far as to compare it to the best in world in it's style. It's a wine that makes you quiet and contemplative. A very special wine and a unique and important touchstone of the Australian wine landscape.

"I went through our museum whites and tasted a few  - the 2015 Quomodo is in a nice enough place to drink now, still strong acidity. The wine is at its best 24-48hrs after decanting in my opinion..."

"This suite of 'whites' from Ruggabellus are distinguished, and the best of orange winemaking in Australia (and would hold fort alongside any wines of international high standard of the same style). Indeed these wines are excellent full stop. Outstanding wines and winemaking nous, from select vineyard sites."

For our whites we are attracted to vineyards that are rocky and closer to the sun - for us the white skins play a very important role as we explore a full and more exotic realm of flavour whilst trying to retain natural acidity, a realm of flavour we hope reflects the old, wild and mystical landscape we are lucky to now call our home amongst the hills here.

We have purchased small parcels of fruit from carefully selected vineyards. They range from 220m to 510m elevation and crucially cover a diversity of soil types. We are now the proud custodians of a beautiful old-vine vineyard at 480-510m elevation containing an interesting mix of Riesling, Semillon, Muscat and Syrah. We anticipate it will provide us valuable parcels of fruit for many years to come.

95 Points - "Riesling dominant here with an 83% holding. There's semillon (9%) and muscat (8%) also in the blend. It sees around three weeks macerating on skins. Built from five different batches of ferments. This suite of 'whites' from Ruggabellus are distinguished, and the best of orange winemaking in Australia (and would hold fort alongside any wines of international high standard of the same style). Indeed these wines are excellent full stop. Outstanding wines and winemaking nous, from select vineyard sites. Quomodo - which translates roughly to 'in what way?', and the question is being asked about Eden Valley riesling;
Grilled citrus characters, spiced orange, amaro, anise, alpine herbs. Tangy orange-y characters to taste, slight saline tang, lemony acidity, fine chalky tannin profile. Lively number here, dances across the palate, zigs and zags with its savoury-spicy fruit and mineral-charged texture. Feels almost curiously fine boned. Refreshing to boot. Reminscent of the mighty, livelier versions of orange wine from Princic, as opposed to Radikon's concentrated orange wine styles. Unreal." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

    Powerful yet smashable wine

So delicious I spilled it all over the table sniffing it far too enthusiastically. A little patience pays off big time, opens up beautifully. Super aromatic and textural - will be buying more while it's still around!

    Amazing skinsky white

Delicious orange wine! Along side Ruggabellus Sallio, these are my favourite skin contact whites being produced in Australia at the moment.

Ruggabellus

Ruggabellus - meaning 'rugged beauty' - is one of the breakaway producers of the much written about 'New Barossa' movement.

A deep connection to the land of the Barossa Valley underpins Abel Gibson's winery. Raised amongst the vines of the Barossa, the cellars of Penfolds and Rockford, with the guidance of local wine legends such as Charlie Melton and his father Rob Gibson, Abel has carved a unique path for his brand.

Ruggabellus focuses on sensitive blends of old vine Syrah, Mataro, Grenache and Cinsault from great old vineyards with freshness and vitality always the key. Oak is never new. Additions are minimal.

The 'whites' are some of the country's finest examples of skin contact 'amber' wines. The variations on Riesling, Muscat and Semillon that are entirely world-class. These are rare and truly authentic Australian wines.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
