The Wanderer
The Wanderer is the personal project of Andrew Marks, an accomplished vigneron deeply rooted in the Yarra Valley's winemaking heritage. While Andrew continues to uphold his family's legacy at Gembrook Hill, The Wanderer allows him to explore new territories beyond the family vineyard, crafting wines that are as much about the journey as the destination. The label has quickly garnered a loyal following, thanks to its focus on elegance, precision, and the kind of minimal intervention winemaking that lets the vineyard’s character shine through.
Andrew's journey in winemaking began long before The Wanderer. After growing up at Gembrook Hill and studying oenology at the University of Adelaide, he honed his craft with stints at iconic wineries like Penfolds and various esteemed vineyards across France and Spain. His experiences abroad, including working with legends like Etienne Sauzet in Burgundy, have deeply influenced his approach, blending traditional techniques with a modern, thoughtful sensibility.
"The Wanderer wines are a series of single-vineyard wines made by Andrew Marks, winemaker and viticulturalist at Gembrook Hill Vineyard... Andrew seeks to achieve the best expression of his vineyards through minimal handling in the winery."
- James Halliday
The Wanderer wines, produced in small quantities, are defined by their finesse and purity. Whether it's the vibrant Pinot Noir, the elegant Chardonnay, or the Rhone-inspired Syrah, each bottle reflects Andrew’s commitment to expressing the unique qualities of each vineyard. His wines are not about making bold statements but rather about capturing subtlety and nuance, offering a quiet but profound connection to the Yarra Valley and beyond.
