Description

The 2023 Bowyer Ridge Vineyard Chardonnay is Skye Salter and Charlie Seppelt’s passion for Burgundy and for Chardonnay on full display, woven into the South Australian landscape.

Sourced from the high-altitude Bowyer Ridge Vineyard in the Adelaide Hills, this is Chardonnay with a story to tell. The hand-picked fruit, grown sustainably on the Rosback family’s pristine site, is whole-bunch pressed and fermented in a mix of 500L French puncheons (18% new) to keep the oak subtle and let the fruit shine.

Expect a wine that’s fresh, tightly wound, and packed with energy. It opens with a hit of struck match and grapefruit, chased by a medley of white peach, fennel, and a sprinkle of cinnamon spice. There’s a lick of almond softness, but make no mistake - this is a lean, vibrant Chardonnay with a tangy line of acidity that feels like a crisp morning dive into the ocean. The finish is long, saline, and with a hint of gin and tonic bite to keep things interesting.

A Chardonnay for the purists, but with just enough Aussie flair. Beautiful drinking and strong value.

After both working in Burgundy now 14yrs ago, we have a real passion for Chardonnay and wanted to embark on making a single vineyard wine from the Adelaide Hills. After much negotiation, we were very lucky to be able to access some fruit from the Bowyer Ridge Vineyard.

Hand-picked fruit, whole bunch pressed, the free run only was drained and fermented in French oak barrels - 18% new, majority in larger 500L puncheons. 100% wild ferment, left on lees in barrel for partial malolactic fermentation while stirring regularly to build texture.

A very tight expression of Bowyer Ridge, green almond, white peach, touch of green melon and seaspray. This is a sleeper… the most tighly wound we have seen since working with the fruit from 2019. The palates volume of primary fruit builds over time and is lengthened by intense grapefruit acidity.

95 points - "A chewy, medium-bodied chardonnay that often rises above the pack by virtue of its emphasis on saline structure and honest vineyard-derived flavors over high-toned, reductive fruit. The wine reminds me of an expression from the Maconnais, all apricots, spiced quince, hay and ginger. Delicious wine that will age well. Drink or hold." - Ned Goodwin MW (JamesSuckling.com)

94 points - "Plenty of struck match, white peach, grapefruit, cinnamon and ginger spice, cut fennel perfume. Bright and tangy, a good core of grapefruity acidity, some lemon zest bitterness, a little lemon curd richness along with a light almond and cashew softness, flinty grip, and a long saline finish offering some gin and tonic bite. Tight. Lots of energy. Very good. Needs a little more time to settle, however." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

94 points - "The 2023 Chardonnay is from the Bowyer Ridge vineyard in the Adelaide Hills. A number of great producers source fruit from this vineyard, so it's nice to see it in the hands of Skye and Charlie Seppelt here. The fruit was handpicked, whole-bunch pressed, with full solids and went straight to puncheons, with a wild ferment in barrel. About 30% of the wine went through malolactic fermentation, stayed on the lees for 10 months in barrel prior to bottling. Aromatically, the wine is exotic—it leads with saffron and preserved lemon rind, white pepper, lemon curd and green mango. In the mouth, the wine shows the cooler season off with aplomb. Tight, focused and salty acidity laces up the juicy finish. There is attractive fruit weight here without being bloated. This is a lovely wine, looking so good this year." - Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

93 points - "Whole-bunch pressed, with full solids naturally fermented at ambient temperature; maturation mainly in older French puncheons, with 18% new; partial mlf and weekly bâttonage for three months; 10 months in barrel. Noted by Skye and Charlie as the tightest chardonnay yet produced by them, this is nonetheless forthcoming, with white nectarine, yellow grapefruit and lemon pith, stone fruit kernel and roasted notes overlaying. Acidity is brisk but not brusque, a pithy phenolic line complexing the tension." - Marcus Ellis (Halliday Wine Companion)

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
