Dr Loosen
Though Dr Loosen has been in the same family for over 200 years it is the inimitable current owner Ernst Loosen who really put them on the world wine map.
After taking over the reins in 1988 he changed up the viticulture and winemaking, so as to make the very best of the outstanding vineyards at his disposal; reducing yields and moving to organic practices.
Located in far western Germany, the Mosel valley’s steep, southfacing slopes create the perfect climate for Riesling, giving the vines ideal exposure to the sun. The cool climate allows the grapes to ripen slowly while retaining bright acidity. The "Sundial of Wehlen" is one of the greatest vineyards in the Middle Mosel. The soil is almost nothing but broken shards of blue Devonian slate, which gives a lively minerality to the wines.
