Description

Crafted by legendary winemaker Stephen Pannell, these wines are a pure expression of McLaren Vale’s Upper Tintara. Koomilya is an organically farmed, 35-hectare site that Stephen has personally nurtured, from a site he's loved for decades. This is one of the great vineyards of McLaren Vale brought to life by one of the best Australian winemakers of his generation.

This release is extremely limited - only 24 bottles of the GT, JC, and DC Block Shiraz are available in this pack, each showcasing a unique take on McLaren Vale Shiraz. These wines are critically acclaimed, with the JC Shiraz scoring 99 points and the Halliday Shiraz of the Year, this pack won't be available for long.

2022 Koomilya JC Block Shiraz

The 2022 JC Block has just been crowned Best Shiraz in Australia by the Halliday Wine Companion, and honestly, it’s not hard to see why. This is one of the standout blocks at Koomilya, planted back in the early 70s and still giving fruit with incredible depth and character.

The season was a cool, slow one thanks to La Niña, and that extra hang time really shows in the wine. The tannins are fine and detailed, the fruit is dark and pure, and there’s that trademark ironstone, mineral edge that always seems to come out of this part of Upper Tintara. It’s structured and serious, but it still feels fresh and balanced rather than heavy.

Stephen Pannell doesn’t mess around with it either. Whole berries, wild ferment, long time on skins, big old oak – it’s all about letting the vineyard do the talking. The result is a Shiraz with layers of blackberry, plum and spice, backed by that ironstone, almost bloody mineral note that screams Upper Tintara and Koomilya. The tannins are beautifully fine but firm, giving it structure without ever feeling heavy.

Only a small amount of JC Block is made each year, and with the gong as the highest rated Shiraz in the country accoring the Halliday Tasting Panelk now under its belt, it won’t stick around for long.

99 points & Best Shiraz in Australia
"The JC has a distinct shape, a harmony, an engulfing perfume, a blend of flavour depth with spice and dusky florals, and an effortlessness... one of Australia’s great wines."

2022 Koomilya DC Block Shiraz

The DC Block is where the Koomilya story really began, and in 2022 it once again shows why this patch of dirt holds such a reputation. Planted on slaty siltstone with ironstone scattered throughout, it’s the darkest and most brooding of the single-block releases – a Shiraz that trades in power and savoury complexity rather than sweetness.

The long, mild La Niña season gave the fruit plenty of time to develop, bringing extra depth to the tannins and a structure that feels tightly wound yet perfectly balanced. You get all the intensity you’d expect – dark fruit, spice, a lick of umami and mineral drive – but there’s a freshness too, something that keeps it from ever feeling heavy. It’s a wine that has presence without excess, built to age for years yet already deeply impressive in its youth.

Made in tiny quantities, the DC Block has always been one of Koomilya’s most sought-after bottlings. The 2022 release is no exception – a wine that speaks clearly of Upper Tintara and Stephen Pannell’s vision of what modern McLaren Vale Shiraz can be.

96 points
"The DC is always the most traditional of feel – of intensity and fruit flavour – of the triad of wines, but it’s as effortless, as delightfully free of artefact as the other wines."
- Marcus Ellis (Halliday Wine Companion)

2022 Koomilya GT Block Shiraz

The GT Block is always the outlier of the Koomilya trio – a little more lifted, a little more fragrant – and in 2022 it has delivered something really special. The block takes its name from the vines’ quirky past life as Gewürztraminer before being grafted to Shiraz back in the 70s. Sitting on slaty siltstone scattered with ironstone, and facing south in its own quiet corner of the vineyard, it consistently produces a style that’s brighter and more aromatic than its siblings.

2022’s long, cool season gave the fruit time to build layers of tannin and complexity without ever tipping into heaviness. It’s savoury and structured, yes, but also alive with red fruits, spice and a kind of mineral freshness that seems to hum through all of Pannell’s Koomilya wines. As always, it was hand-harvested, fermented with native yeast and a portion of whole berries, and raised in large old oak to let the vineyard speak for itself.

Made in very small quantities, the GT Block is a fascinating expression of McLaren Vale Shiraz – perfumed, detailed and full of energy – and a reminder of just how distinctive this site really is.
