Description

This is coastal Geelong Chardonnay at its most refined. The fruit comes from Nurringa Park, a breezy vineyard just a stone’s throw from the shores of Port Phillip Bay. With sandy loam, clay and limestone soils underfoot, and cool ocean influence above, it’s a site tailor-made for tension and purity.

In 2024, Ben Mullen and Ben Hine have delivered a wine that’s all class. It was whole-bunch pressed to French oak, just 20% new, then left to do its thing. No overworking, just a gentle, hands-off ferment on full solids, with a touch of malo to bring texture into the frame.

What you get in the glass is a citrus-charged, white-fruited expression with a chalky, mineral edge and beautiful drive. It’s sleek, composed and impossibly easy to drink. A quiet overachiever, this is arguably the best Chardonnay yet out of the Mulline cellar.

"The best Port Arlington Chardonnay I've tasted. Aromas of perfectly ripened stone fruits, orange blossom and a touch of sea spray precede the chalky, nicely concentrated and very well-balanced palate. A delight to consume now and over the next three to five years plus."
- Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)

"This is an absolute belter. Straight to the pool room with this one. It’s saline, driven by white peach, neatly tucked with oak and then exceptionally focussed and sustained through the finish. From all angles this wine is a definite yes. We’re onto something pretty special here. Don’t hesitate."

97 points - "From a vineyard on the water in Port Arlington planted in '94. 20% new French barriques; 15% mlf. Mulline took full control of the vineyard in '23, and it now shows in what's the best Port Arlington Chardonnay I've tasted. Aromas of perfectly ripened stone fruits, orange blossom and a touch of sea spray precede the chalky, nicely concentrated and very well-balanced palate. A delight to consume now and over the next three to five years plus." - Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)

96 points & Top 100 Australian Wines of 2025 - "This wine sits on the edge of reduction, with mineral-edged notes of struck matches, lemon zest, grapefruit, sea spray, chalk and biscuits. The palate is mid-weighted with a textural mouthfeel and striking acidity that carries underlying power and tension. Grown 200 meters from the ocean, which adds a saline edge. 20% malolactic fermentation has left an electric drive. Drink or hold. Screw cap." - Ryan Montgomery (James Suckling)

    Lean and tasty

It took a while to open up but when it did it was very delicious. Plenty of lifted sort of ethereals stonefruit and maybe like a lemon curd flavour. There was also a biscuity nougat flavour and sense of salinity It was also very zippy and refreshing.

Sourced from the Nurringa Park Vineyard, just one kilometre from the coast. Soils include sandy loam, dark clay and limestone, planted in 1994 to clones I10V1 and I10V5.
Fruit was handpicked and pressed straight to oak with full solids. Fermentation took place in a cold room, with the wine sulphured post-primary. 20% matured in new French oak, with the remainder in seasoned barriques and puncheons. 20% underwent malolactic fermentation. Aged in barrel for 8 months.

Mulline Wines

Established in 2018 Mulline Vintners is a double dose of Bens, specifically winemaker Ben Mullen and business brain and wine drinker Ben Hine. Mullen has experience from around the globe, and was most recently winemaker at Clyde Park.

They source fruit from around the Geelong area of Victoria with a focus on Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir, working with growers farming sustainably and organically. All steps of the winemaking operation are done with a major focus on looking after the environment.

Their first releases from the 2019 vintage were met with some acclaim - they are definitely young guns to watch out for.

To prevent embarrassment and to encourage rapping couplets... Mulline rhymes with “divine”.
