Description

The Grosset Springvale Riesling is a top example of Watervale Riesling, one of the premium sub-regions of the Clare Valley. Known for its softer fruit and floral aromatics compared to its racier sibling, the Polish Hill, the Springvale is a wine that delivers immediate pleasure while promising even more over the next decade.

Crafted from Grosset’s 5.3-hectare, A-Grade Certified Organic and Biodynamic vineyard, the Springvale Riesling is one of the country's most collectable. The vineyard’s thin red loam topsoil sits over limestone, with deep roots anchored in slate bedrock—a rare formation in Watervale. This geology, combined with careful hand-tending and a commitment to biodynamic principles, results in a wine that is dry and mineral-charged, yet deliciously approachable.

95 points
"Grosset has been a star producer for all the time I’ve been in wine but right now its wines are as good or better than they’ve ever been. I’m opting for a score of 95 but I could easily go 96."
- Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

The 2024 release captures the full spectrum of classic Watervale flavours—lime and lemon are at the forefront, but there’s a delightful mix of anise, marshmallow, and floral notes adding complexity. The texture is waxy, with a cool, firm finish that’s bright and zesty, making it incredibly enjoyable right now. Critics are already singing its praises, with Mike Bennie highlighting its lemon-lime profile and subtle hints of mint and tutti-frutti florals, awarding it a well-deserved 95 points.

With only two-and-a-half bottles produced per vine, the 2024 Grosset Springvale, crafted by one of the country's most incisive wine minds, is a stunning release.

"Jeffrey Grosset’s Clare Valley rieslings are a must-buy every year, but in a year like 2024 they become a “sell a kidney to buy more” proposition."
- Nick Ryan (The Weekend Australian)

95 points
"Texture is somewhat waxy, the finish cool and firm, bright and zesty. Very enjoyable right now, a little lighter on in character, with lots of pleasing, cool and bright charisma."
- Mike Bennie (Halliday Wine Companion)

Grosset Springvale is a 5.3 hectare high-altitude vineyard and part of a larger property at Watervale in the Clare Valley. Grosset Springvale Riesling is produced entirely from Springvale Vineyard.

A truly unique viticultural site due to its geology, relative isolation and high altitude, it was purchased by Grosset in 2000 and planted in 2001. The thin topsoil is made up of red loam over limestone, and, atypical for this sub-region, the vines are deeply rooted in slate bedrock. There is a north-south fault line on the eastern border, limiting the vineyard’s expansion. This formation dates back many hundred million years. Vineyard rows are oriented to optimise sunshine.

Springvale is an A-Grade Certified Organic and Biodynamic (ACO) vineyard. The soil is not worked.

The relatively close-planted vines (2,500/hectare) are hand-tended. Planted entirely to two clones of riesling (one widely planted German, one rare German), the sturdy and resilient vines produce compact yellow-green bunches of moderate sized berries. Hand-harvested, each vine produces an average of two-and-a-half bottles of wine.

The balance of the property has been returned to native vegetation. Greater species diversity facilitates natural pest and disease management.

96 points - "Jeffrey Grosset’s Clare Valley rieslings are a must-buy every year, but in a year like 2024 they become a “sell a kidney to buy more” proposition. His magisterial ‘Polish Hill’ wine will be a long-lived classic, but right now this utterly beguiling offering from his Watervale vineyard, strewn with citrus blossom, lifted by lemongrass and electrified with thrilling acidity, is undeniable." - Nick Ryan (The Weekend Australian)

95 points - "Polish Hill has this covered but this is still a fabulous Springvale Riesling. It’s an interesting wine, driven by lemon and lime as you would expect but with anise, marshmallow and pretty floral characters floating about. The anise is almost into red licorice territory, which seems bizarre in a riesling, but it’s definitely there, like a lurker to the forum of citrus and tonic water. Grosset has been a star producer for all the time I’ve been in wine but right now its wines are as good or better than they’ve ever been. I’m opting for a score of 95 but I could easily go 96." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

95 points - "An attractive and approachable, understated expression emerges from this '24 release of Springvale. Lemon-lime, some orange peel, faint minty notes, green apple juice, with some lemon verbena and tutti-frutti floral notes expressed through scents and flavours alike. Texture is somewhat waxy, the finish cool and firm, bright and zesty. Very enjoyable right now, a little lighter on in character, with lots of pleasing, cool and bright charisma." - Mike Bennie (Halliday Wine Companion)

95 points - "The 2024 Springvale Riesling is lemony and tight in the mouth with layers of pith and pepper, citrus and grass. The phenolics are chalky and quite firm, and this stretches out the flavor over the finish. A superb wine, this is austere in its way but excellent nonetheless. It will take some time to open out; the fleshy fruit is there, but it's folded away for now." - Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

    Elegant and affordable.

Grosset’s Springvale Riesling is one of Grosset’s riesling triumvirs. The Alea is delightful and finishes with a touch of residual sweetness. The Polish hill is a smashing riesling, but with a bigger price tag. The Springvale is equally enjoyable with out the expense. Great with oysters.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
