Description

Clonakilla’s Shiraz Viognier is the wine that proved Australia could do cool-climate elegance just as well as the Northern Rhône, and the 2024 vintage is one of the best in its history.

It was a heartbreaking start to the season with October frosts wiping out a huge chunk of the crop, but the fruit that survived benefited from a glorious, warm autumn. The result is a wine at the "high-water mark" for the estate - ripe and powerful, yet incredibly precise.

The perfume on this release is the thing that gets you. You get an aromatic explosion of orange blossom, rose petals, and raspberry mixed with more savoury hits of cracked pepper and sandalwood. On the palate, it’s remarkably layered; there’s a core of cherry and plum fruit, but it’s the non-fruit stuff - the notes of soy, smoked meats, and graphite - that make it so complex.

Even with its underlying power, the wine remains lithe and medium-bodied with the hallmark silky tannins that have made Tim Kirk’s flagship a legend. It’s already showing great drinkability, but given its immaculate balance and concentration, it will easily strut its stuff for the next two decades. This is a world-class release that tops even the masterpieces of recent years.

"If one may start with the bottom line, the only reason that this one didn’t get 100 points is because there would seem to be every chance that Tim Kirk will continue to outdo himself and come up with something even better. Mind you, looking at this wine, it is hard to imagine how he will do that. As always, this sits amongst the world’s very best Shiraz Viognier blends... The previous vintage was a masterpiece. This one tops it."

"The 2024 Shiraz Viognier is so perfumed from the glass... I love this wine in pretty much every vintage condition; it varies each year, but it remains true to its fine, complex DNA. This is super."

"The detail, the elegance, the intensity, the length — this is a wine of class and quiet confidence. The term ‘national treasure’ came to mind. Outstanding."

Mind you, looking at this wine, it is hard to imagine how he will do that. As always, this sits amongst the world’s very best Shiraz Viognier blends. It must also sit amongst the very best releases of this particular wine. World class. Deep and dark purple in hue, this is full of black fruits, black cherries, florals, cassis, leather, mocha, truffles, raspberries, aniseed and tobacco leaves. Immaculate balance, extraordinary length, a seductive texture and the silkiest of tannins, it will provide immense pleasure for at least the next two decades. The previous vintage was a masterpiece. This one tops it." - Ken Gargett (Wine Pilot)

98 points - "This release comes off two cool La Nina growing seasons and marks a return to a savory and earth-driven style. Aromas of red cherries, raspberries, rose petals, graphite, white pepper, sandalwood and citrus peel. The palate is medium-bodied with silky tannins and bright acidity, offering a vibrant, finely textured mouthfeel with a long, perfumed finish. Elegant and precise with real clarity, showing all the hallmarks and charm of the Northern Rhone. Excellent. Drink or hold." - Ryan Montgomery (James Suckling)

97 points - "The 2024 Shiraz Viognier is so perfumed from the glass, with notes of orange blossom and Boscobel rose, raspberry seed and peppercorns. The wine is delicately layered, spicy and medium-bodied, with so many nuanced levels of texture and flavor. In youth, these wines express floral detail and an orange-peel lift, while with age, they begin to show meaty nuances and ethereal, dried-rose-petal complexity. I love this wine in pretty much every vintage condition; it varies each year, but it remains true to its fine, complex DNA. This is super. 14% alcohol, sealed under screw cap." - Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

97 points - "Good depth of bright translucent purple colour; reserved spicy aromas, the palate deliciously flavoured with concentration and fruit sweetness, there is violet and blackberry, a touch of pepper, a powerful wine of focused intensity and terrific length. Juicy middle surrounded by fine grained balancing tannins. Already has lovely drinkability. Superb shiraz. A riper and more powerful vintage of this wine." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

97 points - "Enchanting aromatics unfold in the glass to reveal a wine of immense complexity and grace. Whole-bunch-derived green bean tones are quick to melt into an array of spices — black pepper, star anise, dried bay leaf, green peppercorn, clove — while elegant fruit lingers beneath in the form of blackberry and black cherry. Whispers of black olive in brine, and an emerging sweep of dried violet whose florality lifts with time in the glass, bringing pretty tones into an otherwise dark-fruited and spice-led perfume. The palate has a cool, mineral feel with svel?ness and elegance throughout: blueberry, steminess, olive tapenade, black cherry, black pepper. It glides through the mouth with effortless lift and anchoring intensity. The tannins are fine and integrated but firm in their framing, while ribbons of cool acidity help pull this to seemingly endless length. Olive tapenade and exotic spice permeate the mouth perfume. The detail, the elegance, the intensity, the length — this is a wine of class and quiet confidence. The term ‘national treasure’ came to mind. Outstanding." - Tom Kline (Wine Pilot)

96 points - "A note from Tim Kirk says ’24 turned out to be heartbreaking and brilliant. The former because frost in October caused significant damage, the latter because 'the fruit that survived delivered powerful aromas and intense flavour.' This is splendid, and yes powerful in flavour and structure, yet reined in by poised if plentiful tannins. Abundantly floral, with pepper, black cherries and plums, soy sauce and spicy oak. It’s full bodied, rich and ripe yet comes out complex and contained." - Jane Faulkner (Halliday Wine Companion)

96 points - "The nose is complex. The palate is powerful. The finish is both fine-grained and sustained. The hallmarks of Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier are in keen supply here though, that said, this release is some years from really strutting its stuff. The nose has a stone-like character to it, along with apricot kernel, mint, mineral and sweet berried fruit. The palate is another matter: the nose plays things cool, but the palate opens up and flexes its fruit. Cherry-plum, anise, soy, assorted florals and smoked meats, though the emphasis is on the abundance of summer berries. It all comes down, in a way, to how the wine touches the wall, and here is where this wine excels: at the exact right time the fingers of flavour show both intricacy and precision. We’re up at the high water mark again here with this 2024 release of Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

Customer Reviews

The 2024 vintage was both heartbreaking and brilliant.

October frosts reduced yields significantly, but the season that followed was evenly warm with rainfall at the appropriate times.

The late summer and early autumn were glorious. The fruit that survived the frost delivered powerful aromas and intense flavour.

The perfume here is really something. A classic Shiraz Viognier.

Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier

"When we had our big celebration last year to mark 50 years of Clonakilla, we arranged the Shiraz Viognier tasting into three brackets: ‘Luminous’ (the cool years), ‘Ethereal’ (moderate years) and ‘Glow’ (warm years).

One thing the tasting demonstrated was that the vineyard signature remains strong regardless of vintage weather patterns. In fact, the cool vintages, (‘luminous’ because every warming ray of light is received with gratitude), reflected the essential character of our site in a marvellously transparent way.

The 2022 Shiraz Viognier is an archetypal example of a luminous vintage. As you will see from the reviews, there is something pure and strikingly beautiful to be found in this wine that took a long and determined journey to ripeness through the cool, moist late summer and autumn of 2022. It is a celebration of everything that makes this site unique and (we think) rather special."

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
