Description

Barrel-fermented Sauvignon Blanc has been a Te Mata Estate signature since 1984, and the 2022 Cape Crest might be its most complete expression yet. This is no simple, fruit-forward Sauv Blanc - it’s complex, layered, and built to evolve.

Sourced from the estate’s historic Hawke’s Bay vineyards, the fruit (a blend of 88% Sauvignon Blanc, 7% Sauvignon Gris, and 5% Sémillon) was hand-harvested, briefly left on skins, then fermented and aged in a mix of new and seasoned French oak. After 11 months on lees with regular stirring, the result is a rich yet precise white with incredible depth.

Expect a vibrant burst of nectarine, grapefruit, and lime zest, alongside layers of lemongrass, guava, and subtle toasty spice. The palate is broad and textural, rolling through ripe stone fruit, herbal lift, and saline minerality, all tied together by crystalline acidity and a long, savoury finish.

Drinking beautifully now, but will evolve over the next decade, developing even more complexity. One of New Zealand’s most distinctive whites, and arguably the finest Cape Crest yet.

95 points - "The 2022 Cape Crest Sauvignon Blanc is composed and tight. It's such a pretty wine. In terms of its ilk, it aligns perhaps with the 2011. I like it so much. This is an elegant and quiet iteration of this wine, with flowering herbs, crushed shells, chalk, a hint of aniseed and crushed nuts. It's a gorgeous wine with a long future in front of it. Interestingly, while I believe this will age gracefully, it is such a controlled and cool wine now that I would suggest that drinking it at any interval would allow it to show its pedigree. Super. The wines are better at the younger end of this vertical than the beginning, which is a great thing for the winery—and an even better thing for us, the drinkers." - Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

94 points - "Cape gooseberry, guava, cream, spice, cut grass and snow pea. Medium-bodied, grapefruit segments, a little thistle and spice, glossy with a firm cut of juicy acidity and subtle flinty texture, aniseed and perfume, pineapple and creamed rice richness, with a pithy finish of excellent length. It has bite, zest and tang, glide and viscosity, and well, it’s Cape Crest writ large. Excellent." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

Since 1984, Cape Crest has developed an international following for its unique expression of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Barrel fermented, with a touch of Sémillon and Sauvignon Gris, it is concentrated and complex with toast, citrus blossom, pear, and stone fruit characters.

ORIGIN
Cape Crest and its gannet symbol refer to Cape Kidnappers, the southern point of Hawke’s Bay, home to the world’s largest mainland colony of these remarkable marine birds.

VINEYARDS
The fully ripe grapes for Cape Crest ’22 were hand-harvested from individual plots within Te Mata Estate’s vineyards between February 28 and March 13, 2022.

WINEMAKING
The separate parcels were each destemmed and lightly crushed, then cooled before a brief period of skin contact. Following pressing and cold-settling, they were run to a mixture of new and seasoned French oak barrels for fermentation. The resulting wines were aged on lees, with regular stirring, for a further 11 months before bottling in February 2023. Cape Crest ’22 is a blend of 88% Sauvignon Blanc, 7% Sauvignon Gris, and 5% Sémillon.

CELLARING POTENTIAL
Cape Crest ’22 will continue to evolve in the bottle for 10 years from harvest.

Te Mata Estate

Te Mata Estate has one of the richest winemaking histories in all of New Zealand.

With vineyards planted back as far as 1896, the rich history of this iconic Hawke's Bay producer is enviable in the relatively young NZ wine landscape.

Their wines come exclusively from carefully selected sites across Hawke's Bay. The aim to craft classic, structural wines that are comparable to the very best the world has to offer.

The Te Mata Estate Coleraine is considered by many as NZ's premier Bordeaux blend. A shining jewel in the crown of the Hawke's Bay region.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
