Description

This is Rob Mann's selection for the best of the best Shiraz grown on Swinney vineyard in Frankland River.

It's the finest expression of the variety he can muster. In just a couple of vintages has quickly become considered a new high watermark for WA Shiraz.

The Great Southern has always championed Shiraz/Syrah but here, the Swinney family and Mann take into rarified territory. A painful bunch and berry selection from 20+-year-old vines, a high percentage of whole bunch amplifying the spice and lift aromatics and well as structure, this is a sublime Australian expression of Shiraz that will mature gracefully for many, many years to come.

"The Farvie wines have almost immediately launched into the upper echelon of fine wine from Western Australia. The 'reserve' selection of fruit from the excellent Swinney vineyard. This is perfumed and pretty, medium weight and spicy, delivers very fine, savoury-edged tannins and exceptional persistence of flavour. It opens with volleys of raspberry, fennel, charcuterie and smoky spice. The palate is succulent, sweet fruited at its heart but shot through with saltbush, orange-y acidity, bloody game meat notes and fennel/mint/briar herbal elements. The flex of tannin is downright beautiful and holds the wine together superbly. A wonderful expression."

"This is one of the most dynamic Syrahs on earth. Lividity and dynamism join forces to make this another remarkable declaration of the power and poise found in the great Frankland River terroir brought to the fore by inspirational winemaking."

"I think this has claims to be the finest Farvie Syrah yet in its relatedly short history... The palate is sublime, almost perfect, in its structure, poise and delivery. The sweet natural fruits are balanced and aligned with the fine minerally, ironstone ferruginous characters. Continues to redefine the Australian varietal style."

"The colour alone stops you in your tracks because it is as near-black as possible, interwoven with ravishing midnight blue and sanguineous red tones. The nose seems to take its instruction from the colour, with a profoundly deep engine of malevolent, night-walker-style blackberry and black cherry tones, shot through with Swedish liquorice, fresh peaty soil and cracked black peppercorns. If Nosferatu, Voldemort, Moriarty and Sauron caught up on a day off, they would drink this wine. And given its freshness and purity, it wouldn’t leave them slow off the mark after their rendezvous because, for all of the awe-inspiring qualities in the glass, this is one of the most dynamic Syrahs on earth. Lividity and dynamism join forces to make this another remarkable declaration of the power and poise found in the great Frankland River terroir brought to the fore by inspirational winemaking." - Matthew Jukes

99 points - "I think this has claims to be the finest Farvie Syrah yet in its relatedly short history. The colour is just brilliant and bright with a glowing purely crimson hue. Power, intensity and concentration delivered with such poise. Bright red fruits with floral dark cherry and a little black olive adds to its nuanced capture on the nose. The palate is sublime, almost perfect, in its structure, poise and delivery. The sweet natural fruits are balanced and aligned with the fine minerally, ironstone ferruginous characters. Continues to redefine the Australian varietal style." - Ray Jordan

Tasting Notes
Impenetrable purple in colour. On the nose, there is cinnamon, couverture, Satsuma plum, black pepper, charcoal and Turkish delight. The palate is tightly focused and intense with graphite, blueberry, iodine, ferrous & exotic spice. Great depth, intensity and optimism. Needs no explanation.

Vineyard Notes
This fruit is dry-grown, vertically-trellised Syrah from our Powderbark B2 and Wilson Pool 801 garden project vineyard sites. Only a sub-section of soil in both blocks is farmed for Farvie in a way that both nourishes and balances the fruit to optimum levels to allow dry farming. The use of shadecloth on the side of the vines that receives the afternoon sun, and rigorous shoot positioning and bunch selection, further refines the unique expression so critical to the personality of this fruit.

Production Notes
The fruit was hand-picked, berry-sorted and gravity-fed to a French oak vat and two demi-muids. We incorporated 65% whole bunches followed by wild fermentation to build structure and texture while promoting the bright and spicy aromatics. The wine spent 12 days on skins and was then pressed directly to fine grained, large format, seaoned French oak, and aged for 14 months prior to bottling. The wine was made with minimum effective Sulphites, is unfined and minimally filtered.

Swinney

The Swinney family's roots in Frankland River stretch back over 100 years.

George John Alexander Swinney was a pioneer of the region, settling a grazing property in Franklands in 1922. Today the property is run by fourth generation brother and sister, Matt and Janelle Swinney. They are taking the family property into great new territory.

Bush vines litter the property. Riesling, Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre are fining a very happy home on the ironstone slopes above the Frankland River.

Now, with Rhys Thomas as viticulturist and vineyard manager since 2021, and sixth generation winemaker Rob Mann crafting the wines in the cellar, this label is on track to become one of the regional benchmarks in short order.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
