Description

The Angel Flower Pinot Noir is a wine that eloquently tells the story of its home every year.

This is the finer-boned of the twin Pyramid Valley Pinot Noirs, it's a thing of beauty when on song.

It's a delicate Pinot Noir, built around complexity and nuance rather than out and out power. The fruit is all destemmed by hand, a laborious process that ensures only the very best pristine fruit makes its way from the vineyard to bottle.

The word 'ethereal' gets thrown around in wine more than it should, but it's more than apt when describing this particular wine.

96 points
“It feels open weave and pretty with rose hip tea, alpine herbal elements, faint game meat, undergrowth and toasty spice strewn around the place. It slips into every corner of the palate, an attractive, sour-sweet flow of tart cherry dressed up with those savoury elements all sheathed in a web of ultra fine, silty, lacy tannin. It finishes with black tea and truffle and a building, drying, refreshing pucker. Fine, elegant, vibrant and energetic. A triumph for the variety.”
- Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

96 points
“A beautifully perfumed, ethereal wine that shows delicate redcurrant, red cherry and raspberry fruits with hints of crushed stone, red flowers, blood orange, clover blossom, sous bois and red apple pastries. There is a lot of light in this wine, all detail and shimmering clarity with a spacious mouthfeel, sapidity to burn and the most graceful of exits. Beautiful drinking.”
- Dave Brookes, (Halliday Wine Companion)

Angel Flower is a cooler, more exposed block than Earth Smoke. The shallow soils and north-facing aspect here result in a more floral and aromatic wine, although the weight and shape of the palate have much in common with Pyramid's other single-site Pinot. Following Mike Weersing's vineyard blueprints, the new team recently planted a little Chardonnay on these soils, recognising its potential also as a great white wine terroir.

Angel Flower is the prettiest of many synonyms for yarrow, a grassland and pasture plant with delicate, fennel-like leaves and a brilliant mass of white flowers. Yarrow is the basis of the biodynamic preparation 502, and is strongly associated with mobilising natural sulphur and potassium in the soil. The winemaking for both wines is almost identical: picked by hand and partially crushed by foot, the wine fermented with its vineyard yeasts and was primarily raised in old French oak (just 10% new). It was bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Pyramid Valley

In the year 2000, Mike and Claudia Elze Weersing found the patch of earth they'd been searching 15 years for.

With a background in winemaking from Burgundy and vintages of experience from some of Europe's finest cellars, Mike knew what he wanted in a vineyard site. With Claudia by his side, they set about planting a biodynamic Garden of Eden from the ground up.

They planted four blocks, half Pinot Noir, half Chardonnay, on the slopes of Pyramid Valley in the South Island.

In 2017 the baton was passed to friends Steve Smith (of Craggy Range renown) and Brian Sheth, who took over the ownership of Pyramid Valley, to further develop this extraordinary legacy. One of their first developments was to extend the Pyramid Valley range to a magnificent winery in Central Otago.

These are some of the most compelling and individual wines in all of New Zealand that have deservedly received much critical acclaim.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
