Description

The 2022 Patatsfontein Wit Versnit is an exceptional white blend crafted by renowned winemaker Reenen Borman in Montagu, at a great price.

This wine, formerly known as Patatsblanc, showcases a unique but harmonious blend of 68% Colombard from 30-year-old vineyards and 32% Chenin Blanc from 16-year-old vines. The meticulous maturation process spans 10 months in a combination of barrel and concrete, adding depth and complexity to the final product.

It's a bright and lively style, full of juicy pear, peach, citrus, and herbaceous notes. The palate is light-bodied and linear, with bright acidity and a nicely pithy finish. Refreshment writ large!

This wine pairs beautifully with light seafood dishes, salads, or simply on its own as a refreshing aperitif. Drink over the next few years for maximum enjoyment!

92 points - "Wit Versnit is the new name for the rechristened Patatsblanc from Montagu's slate soils and is a separately fermented assemblage of Colombard with 34% Chenin Blanc. Stony and herbaceous, it has a waft of oak spices, fennel, quince and citrus peel flavours and a pithy, mineral core. 2024-27." - Tim Atkin MW

92 points - "The excellent Patatsfontien Chenin Blanc as made by Reenen Borman from Montagu grapes (see review of 2022 here) has always had a sibling wine in the form of Patatsblanc, to be called Patatsfontein Wit Versnit henceforth.

Consisting of approximately 68% Colombar from 30-year-old vineyards and 32% from 16-year-old Chenin Blanc vineyards, the 2022 was matured for 10 months in a combination of barrel and concrete. Pear, peach, citrus and fynbos on the nose while the palate has great clarity and linearity – light-bodied with bright acidity and a nicely pithy finish (alc: 12.5%)." - Christian Eedes (Wine Magazine South Africa)

About the Winemaker

After graduating from Elsenberg in 2010, Reenen went to work at the family estate in Stellenbosch and he is currently counted among the most talented winemakers in the country. In recent years, his star has been rising, partly due to his amazing syrah wines. Perhaps the knowledge he gained during his internship at Hermitage in the Rhone Valley contributed to this. Reenen's latest project is in Montagu, where he took over a vineyard from Chris Alheit and where he now makes his Patatsblanc and Patatsfontein, two unique white wines.

Vineyard

The grapes for this wine come from a vineyard some 80 kilometers from Stellenbosch with a strongly slatey soil. The vineyard is only 0.6 hectares and was formerly planted with sweet potatoes, hence the name. The grapes from the vineyard were first used by Chris Alheit for his Carthology, but due to the distance between the vineyard and his winery, he handed the vineyard over to Reenen.

Vinification

A total of five harvests were done on this vineyard. The vines are planted as a field blend. Whole bunch-pressed and a vinification with as little intervention as possible. Fermentation and upbringing in older oak barrels, for 10 months.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
