Description

Fleurie has a reputation for being one of the most ethereal crus of Beaujolais and few capture the personality of this site like Georges Descombes.

This is one of his most sought-after cuveés. Hailing from old vines in the Grille-Midi section of the vineyard, this is a soft, enchanting red wine of beauty and personality.

It's fine boned but shows great intensity and firmness of tannin. Succulent red fruits, like cherries and strawberries picked fresh from the garden, and a billowy perfume of flowers, fresh herbs and newly-tilled earth.

Truly one of the great Fleuries, year-in-year-out.

Beaujolais in late January makes for an eerie landscape. The gray, cloudy skies are set against hectares of dead earth dotted with lines of stunted, gnarly vines, pruned down for the dormant stages of winter. In the morning, fog rolls over and down the hillsides and the wet clay sticks to your shoes with a vengence. It's a great time to see the stark differences between conventional and organic farming. Even in the cold of January, the vineyards of Georges Descombes have a bright, green ground cover with small flowers just beginning to bloom. His vines looked like they were still sleeping as the earth slowly wakes up. The conventional vineyards look just like the surface of the moon...

This superb wine is from the famed Grille-Midi section of Fleurie - Yvon Metras has his vines here too. This has a super granite/floral nose that is very attractive, particularly the top notes of strawberries and violets. This is a super bottle; sweet, fresh, crunchy - perfect balance and super length. .

    Great complexity

Beautiful complexity. Fragrant on the nose, bright fruit and well incorporated tannins to provide some grip on the back pallet. Drunk great on opening with minimal air. Didn’t benefit from being open for a couple of days, went backwards.

    Succulent, beautiful wine

Comparisons between pinot noirs and gamay are blown away by this vine because of it’s essential loveliness. Such a pleasure to drink, any analysis seems trite.

Georges Descombes

Georges Descombes, son of a Beaujolais vigneron, drew inspiration for his label from Marcel Lapierre's legendary wines. Taking the reins in 1988, he manages 15 hectares across Beaujolais regions, firmly aligning with the "natural" movement and holding organic certification—a rarity among peers. Georges implements a hands-off approach, hand-harvesting whole clusters, slow-pressing in an antique vertical press, and fermenting with natural yeasts in a low-temperature semi-carbonic maceration. Minimal sulfur is used.

Recognized as the unofficial fifth member of Beaujolais' "Gang of Four," Georges elevates traditional farming to new heights, certifying both inherited and acquired vineyards as organic. His wines, celebrated for exceptional quality, rank among Beaujolais' finest. The masterful winemaking, rooted in excellent farming, reveals beautifully complex aromas. The palate, showcasing gorgeous fruit unaffected by excess sulfur dioxide, delivers impeccably balanced, clean, and enduringly long wines. Georges Descombes' commitment to organic viticulture and hands-off winemaking solidifies his position as a leader among Beaujolais' natural producers.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
