Description

Aussie-born Dave Fletcher has earned his stripes the hard way - by packing up his life and diving headfirst into Barbaresco. Over the years, he’s become a familiar name in the Langhe, not just as the winemaker at historic Cantina Cerrato, but for carving out his own small label in a region famously protective of its traditions. Recta Pete is the most complete expression of that journey.

The name is a nod to his Scottish ancestry (it translates loosely to "shoot straight") and his clear-eyed goal: make proper, soulful Barbaresco. This wine blends fruit from three Cru sites - Roncaglie (40%), Faset (30%) and Ronchi (30%) - sourced from the younger sections of each vineyard. It’s all destemmed, wild fermented and aged for 24 months in old 300L barrels, then bottled with minimal handling. No flash, just quiet confidence.

There’s power and structure here, but it’s delivered with restraint. A Barbaresco that’s serious without being showy, and an inside line on some of the region’s best-value Nebbiolo.

"Very good wine here. Very. Cherry, liquorice, sarsaparilla, a little tea and spice, and quite some dried rose perfume about it. It’s firm and has a distinct graphite feel to tannin, and quite some density too, a ‘mineral’ and stony thing, black tea and lots of fine grip on a finish of excellent length. It’s a beautiful wine. I recommend it highly."

What a stunner! Red fruits, purple flowers and great balance with tannins growing in the finish. Loved it

    entry level barb? yes please

newish to nebb but this definitely scores for a very brilliant expression with the expected complex autumn leaf and raspberry nose and sublime mouth experience with beautiful lingering tannins. His starderi is next in line.....

In 2021 is the introduction of the Ronchi Cru to the blend. Three Cru’s go into the composition of the Recta Pete. David uses the younger sections of his vineyards in Faset, Roncaglie & now Ronchi.

2021 blend is 40% Roncaglie, 30% Faset & 30% Ronchi. Recta Pete means ‘shoot straight’, a nod to David’s Scottish family’s heritage as former arrow makers and his original vision of making Barbaresco.

100% destemmed. Open ferment, No post ferment soak. Elevage in old oak, over 10 years old, 300ltr barrels. Barbaresco can only be released on the 3rd January following harvest, giving the wine approx. 27 months total aging. David ages his wines for 24 months in barrel (legally it only needs be 12 as a minimum) then 3 months in bottle.

The three Cru’s give of course differing characteristics to the overall wine. David explains that Roncaglie is South West facing, a little more shaded so longer hang time & more ferrous soils = Dark fruits, more masculine tannin. Faset has the same soils as Roncaglie, slightly cooler, David comments it has the densist structure, more Barolo than Barbaresco. Ronchi is East facing and in this vintage adds some ‘freshness’ to the wine.

Fletcher

Dave Fletcher fell in love with Nebbiolo early in his winemaking career.

After some time spent in the Nebbiolo Mecca, Piemonte, Dave moved his whole family and life there to pursue his passion for the variety. He took up a position as winemaker at famous producer Cerrato and still makes the wines there to this day.

His own label has been a slow labour of love to get off the ground but now it's in full swing. Through sourcing select plots of fruit from local growers in Barbaresco and planting his own vines, his small eponymous label is now taking flight.

Precious little of the Fletcher wines make it to Australia and they sell out in a flash. If you're a true enthusiast of Nebbiolo, you need to get to know Dave's wines, they offer brilliant value for money.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
