Description

The 2015 Château Coutet 1er Cru Classé Sauternes Barsac is a dazzling display of what this historic estate in Barsac does best: elegant, layered sweetness balanced by remarkable freshness.

Situated at the northern edge of Bordeaux’s famous sweet wine region, Château Coutet boasts a winemaking history dating back to the 13th century and an unparalleled terroir influenced by the cooling Ciron River. These conditions, combined with meticulous vineyard care, encourage the development of botrytis, or “noble rot,” which gives Coutet’s wines their trademark richness and complexity. The vineyard is planted predominantly to Sémillon, with smaller amounts of Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle, all grown in the clay-limestone soils that lend a crisp, vibrant edge to the wines.

In this 2015 vintage, tropical and citrus fruits leap from the glass with notes of pineapple, lemon pie, and a hint of orange blossom, harmoniously mingling with a honeyed depth. The wine is aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, adding layers of opulence and structure. On the palate, the wine is beautifully balanced - rich and luscious yet brimming with lively acidity that keeps each sip refreshing and precise. As Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate describes, it finishes long with “wonderful freshness” and will unfold further complexity over the coming decades.

With 153 grams of residual sugar per litre, this is a dessert wine that brings intensity without overwhelming sweetness. Its lush texture, coupled with vibrant acidity, makes it a “compressed spring coil,” ready to unwind over the next 25–30 years. Enjoy this magnificent Coutet now or lay it down in your cellar to savour as it continues to evolve.

"The palate is well balanced and very harmonious, viscous in texture with perfectly matched acidity and fine delineation and precision toward the finish. Once the bouquet awakens this should be a seriously fine Barsac/Sauternes."

96 points - "A heavenly dessert wine, the 2015 Château Coutet boasts a huge nose of caramelized citrus, crème brûlée, tangerine, and honeysuckle. With huge richness and sweetness, moderate acidity, a thick, fat mouthfeel and a blockbuster finish, it’s borderline over the top yet holds it together. It will be interesting to see how this evolves, but it’s undeniably gorgeous today." - Jeb Dunnuck

94-96 points - "The 2015 Coutet comes with 153 grams per liter of residual sugar at 13.8% alcohol. It has a fragrant bouquet with acacia honey, citrus scents and a touch of melted butter, all very well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with impressive purity, those limestone soils imparting the acidity that defined this Barsac, and lending great precision and tension on the live-wire finish. This is a wonderful Coutet that feels energetic - a compressed spring coil that will drink earlier than the likes of Climens or de Fargues, but has the DNA to age gracefully over 25-30 years." - Wine Advocate

95 points - "The 2015 Coutet is pale lemon colored with intense grapefruit, lemon pie and pineapple notes with touches of crushed rocks, honeycomb and lime zest plus a waft of orange blossoms. Rich, opulent and layered with loads of tropical and citrus notes, it has wonderful freshness, finishing long." - Robert Parker (The Wine Advocate)

95 points - "The 2015 Coutet is a little reduced on the nose and lacks the flair of some of its peers. Pinched at the moment - maybe going through a sulky phase? The palate is well balanced and very harmonious, viscous in texture with perfectly matched acidity and fine delineation and precision toward the finish. Once the bouquet awakens this should be a seriously fine Barsac/Sauternes." - Neal Martin (Vinous.com)

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
