Pinot noir is a delicate red grape variety renowned for producing elegant, lighter-bodied wines, often from cooler climates. While Burgundy in France has long been the global benchmark for this noble grape, offering everything from entry-level "Bourgogne Rouge" to the prestigious grand and premier "cru" wines, it's not the only place where exceptional Pinot Noir is made. Today, the variety flourishes in many parts of the world, including right here in Australia.

Australia is home to some truly outstanding Pinot Noir, recognized globally for its quality. Victoria is at the forefront of Australian Pinot production, particularly in cooler climate areas. The five key regions in Victoria are Yarra Valley, Mornington Peninsula, Macedon Ranges, Gippsland, and Geelong all known for producing wines with finesse and complexity. Beyond Victoria, Tasmania and Southern NSW, especially around Tumbarumba, also excel in crafting exquisite cool-climate Pinots, while the Adelaide Hills, with its slightly warmer climate, offers fuller-bodied expressions with riper flavors.

Across the ditch in New Zealand, regions to keep an eye on include Central Otago, the world's southernmost wine region, which is perhaps New Zealand's most famous and produces style a powerful and silken expression of Pinot. For something more approachable Marlborough produces vibrant Pinots with bright red fruit and subtle acidity, while the Wairarapa sub-region of Martinborough typically delivers Pinots with darker fruit profiles, featuring plums and savoury, chocolatey undertones.

Beyond Australia and New Zealand, other regions worth exploring for Pinot Noir include Germany, the USA (especially Oregon), Chile and Argentina

Pinot Noir is considered to be a special wine because of its delicate and complex flavor profile, which can range from light and fruity to full-bodied and earthy. It is a grape that is sensitive to its environment and requires cool climates and well-drained soils to develop its full potential. Additionally, it is a versatile wine that pairs well with a wide range of foods, making it a favorite of wine enthusiasts and collectors around the world.

What regions make the best Pinot Noir?

Pinot Noir is grown in many cool climate wine regions throughout the world, but some regions are particularly well-known for producing exceptional Pinot Noir. Internationally, famous Pinot Noir regions include Burgundy in France, the Willamette Valley in Oregon, USA, and Central Otago in New Zealand. Within Australia, the best Pinot Noir comes from Tasmania, the Adelaide Hills, and many regions throughout Victoria.
