In our opinion, Owen Latta is currently Australia's best zero sulphur winemaker, and is setting a new benchmark for what we call 'natural wine'. He's transforming the perceptions of wine from his home in Ballarat and making a revolutionary style of wine for this region, the Pyrenees and surrounds.
The new flight of whites, pinks and orange wines we tasted from him this week blew us away. These are not the wild, funky natural wines that have sparked controversy in Australian wine over the last decade. These are quintessential fine wines; detailed, pure and precise. They just so happen to also be natural.
"So much interest in the wines of this fine, young producer, a real boundary pusher but with an eye on elevated quality in the same, avant garde breath."
- Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
The Latta range sits in a that glorious Goldilocks zone, smack in the centre of a ven diagram of playful, intellectual, and nourishing - these wines are food for the soul. Pinot Gris with incredible texture and floral spice, insane mineral-driven Riesling, one of the most complex and focused Sauvignon Blancs we've seen outside of Sancerre and a duo of incredible Roses which would both sit comfortably in the top echelon of wines of their ilk in Australia, or anywhere.
It's a blistering set of wines. If the rest of the country cotton on fully to what's happening in his Ballarat cellar, his wines won't be priced this reasonably forever. Thankfully, for now, you can get these next-level creations in the early $30's. Ludicrous value.
