Michael Downer's Hottest of Hot Streaks

Murdoch Hill Winemaker Michael Downer is on one of the hottest hot streaks in Australian wine at the moment. He is taking his small, family-owned winery in Oakbank in the Adelaide Hills to a new stratosphere.

In 2017 Michael had a truly epic run, being named both the 2017 Young Gun of Wine AND the 2017 Gourmet Traveller WINE Young Winemaker of the Year!

The flood of fantastic results for Michael comes as no surprise considering the outstanding releases he has been pumping out from his family winery.

The Murdoch Hill Estate range constantly offers some of the best value to be found in the Adelaide Hills and the pristine 2017s released today are some of Michael's best work to date.

The 2017 season was long, slow and cool in the Adelaide Hills, the perfect vintage for the more delicate varieties such as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

The value he packs into these wines is very impressive. These are some of the most bankable sub-$30 wines in the hills and they are in career-best form.

The limited release Artisan Series are all hot off the press.

These are the wines where Michael stretches his creative muscles, using wild yeasts, whole bunch ferments and a more minimalist approach in his winemaking. He searches out great sites across the Hills and brings them to life wonderfully.

With rave reviews from the likes of James Halliday and Mike Bennie, Michael has knocked these small batch releases out of the park.
