The question "Is This Australia's Best Winery Right Now?" may seem hyperbolic or click-baity on its face, but it's a legitimate question we've been asking ourselves since tasting the latest icon release with Yangarra General Manager and Chief Winemaker Peter Fraser earlier this week.
It's an extraordinary selection of wines from Pete and his team that we are offering today. For years we've talked about the potential for McLaren Vale to go toe-to-toe with the best producers of Rhone varieties in the world. Unequivocally, Yangarra is realising that potential.
These wines speak of place and of a producer pushing the boundaries of quality to new heights in this country. The Grenaches are universally considered world-class. The Shiraz wines this year have wonderful freshness and spice that walk hand in hand with inherent power. And the textural whites from Roussanne and its co-conspirators are, as Master of Wine Ned Goodwin observed, "Among the New World’s greatest whites."
The reviews for these wines speak volumes and while they are not inexpensive, in the context of wines of this class on a global stage they are very fairly priced.
This is a special producer running at full tilt. The wines are as always extraordinarily limited. We encourage you to sample them while you can. You will not regret it.
