What do you get when you cross two of the Yarra Valley's most talented winemakers with the vintage of a lifetime?
Answer:
The blistering 2017 Salo Chardonnay
Salo is a collaborative project between Giant Steps Cheif Winemaker Steve Flamsteed and Arfion main man Dave 'Bro' Mackintosh.
The Salo project began a decade ago when Mackintosh was working at Giant Steps alongside Flamsteed. The two became great mates, their winemaking philosophies (if not their Rugby allegiances) were like two peas in a pod.
Now, 10 years on, they have hit paydirt with the 2017 vintage.
"We’re pretty excited about 2017, not only because it is our tenth vintage, but because it has to be one of the best we’ve seen..."

Any way you dice it, this is a brilliant Chardonnay.
It's a coiled spring of smoke, funk, and pristine fruit. Precise, powerful and a little wild-edged, it's a wine that will unfurl in the cellar yet thrill on the dinner table next week. It's amazing value given the pedigree and the quality on offer. In short, it's a no-brainer for cool-climate Chardonnay lovers.
With less than 250 dozen made and the feverish scramble for allocations after Mike Bennie's rave 96 point review, this wine will not last long.
The Salo Chardonnay is one of the hidden gems of the Yarra Valley.
