Description

Mt Difficulty’s 2023 Bannockburn Pinot Noir is a bold and beautifully crafted expression of one of New Zealand’s most iconic wine regions. With a legacy that stretches back to the late 1990s, Mt Difficulty has built a reputation for producing premium Pinot Noir, and this wine more than upholds that standard.

Sourced from estate and winery-managed vineyards on the southern side of the Kawarau River, this Pinot showcases the unique terroir of Bannockburn. Low fertility soils—ranging from light sands to clays and gravels—combine with the region’s extreme diurnal shifts to produce fruit of exceptional intensity and complexity. A mix of older clones (5, 6, and 10/5) and Dijon selections (113, 115, 667, 777) adds further nuance to the blend.

It's quintessential Central Otago Pinot, with aromas of dark cherries, warm spice, and hints of dried herbs and cedar. On the palate, blackberry, plum, and raspberry notes take centre stage, supported by fine, web-like tannins that provide structure and depth. The finish is long and layered, with a touch of spice and earthy complexity that lingers beautifully.

Whether you drink it now or cellar it for a decade, this is one of the most bankable Pinots in Central Otago. It’s a true showcase of Mt Difficulty’s skill and the remarkable Bannockburn terroir.

93 points - "Black cherry and charry oak share the stage in this forward, generous, fruit-driven style with velvety tannins and ripe fruit throughout. Accessible and plush with a soft finish, this is a drink-now proposition with mid-term ageability." Stephen Wong (The Real Review)

    Basic big-boned Central Otago Pinot

These typically need 2-3 years to show their best, right now it's a bit big and hard, but you can see the fruit is up to the trademark tannin. Pushing the price a little for a mid-tier CO Pinot, but certainly better than the also reliable (and cheaper) Maude of the same vintage.

    Can't go wrong

An excellent bottle and goes amazing with a nice T-Bone.

For a full expression of terroir, we co-fermented different clonal lots from the same vineyard, while keeping vineyards separate. About 75% of our ferments were de-stemmed only; the remaining quarter contained 15-40% whole clusters. Fermentation with indigenous yeasts lasted an average of 7 days with daily punch downs. The wine stayed on skins for a further 7-9 days post-dryness, after which it was pressed off to barrel where it resided on full lees for 12 months. It underwent malolactic fermentation in the spring, was racked out of barrel in late autumn and filtered but not fined prior to bottling.
