Description

The team at Swinney firmly believe that great wine comes from great fruit - for them, it's as simple as that.

This beautiful Mourvedre shows their philosophy to a tee, showing off the beautiful terroir of their estate in the Frankland River. As with all of their wines, you'll find the distinct ferrous mineral character that comes from the ironstone gravel in their vineyards.

For all lovers of a luscious, rich and spicy red, you'll definitely find a lot of drinking pleasure within.

"A 90/6/4% blend of mourvèdre/shiraz/grenache; hand picked with selective passes over two days, each day berry sorted, thence gravity fed to a single fermenter, 20% whole bunches; wild fermented and 11 days on skins; 11 months in barrel. Not fined, minimal SO2. Prompts a burst of song, 'Where have all the tannins gone?' It's juicy, fast on its feet, and resoundingly vibrant, its red and sour cherry fruit on song."

Tasting Notes

Deep Magenta withy purple hues. Wild fruits with an intoxicating mix of pomegranate, strawberries, and satsuma plums mixed with some white pepper and cassia bark. Medium to full-bodied with lashings of red and blue fruits. Sizzling venison and Chinese five-spice complexity, finishing with a chalky, savoury, and finely detailed tannin structure.

Vineyard Notes

Mourvèdre from dry-grown bush vines on the rich gravelly-loam soils of our Swinney Wilson’s Pool vineyard. Careful canopy management, fruit thinning and selective hand harvesting over multiple passes, all ensure we achieve as close to perfect fruit as possible.

Production Notes

The fruit was hand-picked on two separate days as flavour and tannin maturity was optimum. Each day’s harvest was berry sorted and emptied to a single stainless steel fermenter via gravity. We incorporated 20% whole bunches and wild fermentation to build structure and texture as well as highlight the distinctive ferrous qualities, fine structure and wild spice of Mourvèdre. The wine spent 11 days on skins prior to pressing directly to fine grained, large format, seasoned French oak. It was aged on lees and bottled after 11 months in barrel. The wine was made with minimum effective Sulphites, is unfined and minimally filtered.

Other Notes

90% Mourvedre, 6% Syrah, 4% Grenache

96 points - "Superlative mourvedre and certainly the leading light for the variety in Australia. Briny, chewy and gorgeous in its savory guise, this is a powerful expression bound to such a taut tannic fabric, underlain by spice and a tuft of dried herb, that there is not for a moment any excess of sweet fruit. Lots of chomp, depth and layers, oozing tapenade, saddle leather, sweet loamy earth, martini brine, menthol and violet notes, with raspberry bon-bon lurking. A wonderful wine deserving of serious praise and cellar time." - Ned Goodwin MW (JamesSuckling.com)

95 points - "Here’s a wild wine of emphatic personality. Blue fruit, white pepper and exotic spice, but also bloody and ferrous too. I’m thinking blood plum, dried orange peel offering a pleasingly biter cinch, chalky and chewy, so much dried herb and liquorice-laced meaty spicy goodness, smudgy and ashen, but kind of vibrant too, with a meaty/grainy/sappy finish of excellent length. A terrific expression of Mataro." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

95 points - "This is a variety that is finding a safe, comfortable home in Frankland River. Lovely perfumed red fruits on the nose displaying a slightly earthy, dusty raspberry and light plummy character. The palate is soft and supple. It’s medium weight with a fine chalky ironstone thing treading through the palate. The cradle of tannins and fine oak, together with natural fruit energy holds a focused long finish." - Ray Jordan (Wine Pilot)

    Moody Mourvèdre

Tightly wound and needs decanting, while young especially. Unique style. Solid Mourvèdre which will get the table talking - love it or hate it

Swinney

The Swinney family's roots in Frankland River stretch back over 100 years.

George John Alexander Swinney was a pioneer of the region, settling a grazing property in Franklands in 1922. Today the property is run by fourth generation brother and sister, Matt and Janelle Swinney. They are taking the family property into great new territory.

Bush vines litter the property. Riesling, Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre are fining a very happy home on the ironstone slopes above the Frankland River.

Now, with Rhys Thomas as viticulturist and vineyard manager since 2021, and sixth generation winemaker Rob Mann crafting the wines in the cellar, this label is on track to become one of the regional benchmarks in short order.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
