Description

Rob Mann is very committed to this variety and is making a statement with this straight Mourvedre under the Farvie range. It's an exciting modern offering of the variety that demands attention.

The fruit was hand-picked from small section of estate vines and fermented as 66% whole bunches for extra bright, spicy aromatics and texture. A savoury red full of structured tannins holding a core of red and blue fruits dusted with spice. This is an absolute benchmark for Mourvedre wines - almost peerless in Australia.

Extremely limited quantities produced - if you want to try the Farvie Mourvedre you better swoop quickly.

96 points & Top 100 Wines of 2024
"A strong candidate for best mourvèdre in this land. It delivers a very strong indication of the variety with inimitable flair of fine tannin, minerality and general complexity. Scents of violets, game meat, new leather, red cherry and cola. Beautiful to sniff on. The palate finessed with Italianate tannin profile, sinewy ribbons of spiciness mixed with a crushed granite-like mineral undertow. More cherry, darker to taste, more game meat and sense of florals, too. Succulence personified with exceptional length. Such a distinctly savoury wine with herbs, spice, meatiness and florals to the fore. Unreal stuff."
- Mike Bennie (Halliday Wine Companion)

"This is the second vintage of the Farvie Mourvedre and takes the excellent ’21 up a notch... The palate is a superb interpretation of the variety in these Frankland soils... Energy and vibrancy set this apart. A worthy addition to the Farvie triumvirate."
- Ray Jordan

"This wine’s fanfare is all-encompassing, with an epic nose that is striking, fruit-packed and sophisticated.... This is another jaw-dropping wine, and it stands a chance of running a longer race than the 2021, too, so be sure to secure your stock."

"The second iteration of this wine (tasted pre-release), which is quickly rising to icon status in Swinney’s portfolio... Complex, vivacious and nuanced; a new Mourvèdre benchmark has been set."
- Cassandra Charlick (Decanter)

The wine is deep crimson with purple hues. On the nose there are hints of fresh porcini, blackberries, summer thunderstorm, cold steel, cinnamon and white pepper. The palate is truly captivating, combining youthful and finely detailed fruit complexity with slightly wild, earthy and rusty structural elements, true to the varietal integrity, while articulating the personality of the site. Effortless, lingering and satisfying..

Vineyard Notes
This fruit is from dry-grown bush vine Mourvèdre from a small selection, based on soil type, of our Swinney Wilson’s Pool vineyard. This section of the vineyard has leaner top soils with a higher percentage of lateritic gravel. Fruit-thinning and selective hand harvesting over multiple passes ensured we achieved as close to perfect fruit as possible.

Production Notes
The fruit was hand-picked, berry-sorted and gravity-fed to a French oak vat. We incorporated 66% whole bunches followed by wild fermentation to build structure and texture while promoting the bright and spicy aromatics. The wine spent 11 days on skins and was then pressed directly to fine grained, large format, seasoned French oak, and aged for 11 months prior to bottling. The wine was made with minimum effective Sulphites, is unfined and minimally filtered.

98 points - "This is the second vintage of the Farvie Mourvedre and takes the excellent ’21 up a notch. It has a dry, savoury and slightly ferruginous rusty nail character offsetting the sweet floral notes on the nose. The palate is a superb interpretation of the variety in these Frankland soils. There is a slightly greater volume of fruit than ’21, bit it retains the same Old-World charm and expression. Chalky tannins and balanced use of oak. Tasted this about 4 months apart and already the shy middle palate I first saw has started to unfurl. Energy and vibrancy set this apart. A worthy addition to the Farvie triumvirate." Ray Jordan

19.5/20 - "Having fallen head over heels with this wine in the 2021 vintage, my stomach was in knots when I approached the 2022 in Perth. Would ‘second album syndrome’ strike? Not a chance. This wine’s fanfare is all-encompassing, with an epic nose that is striking, fruit-packed and sophisticated. There are abundant rose petals, plum and red cherry notes, and sensual waves of florality and bounteous juiciness are countered by intense, brittle minerality. The acid line scours the palate with masochistic striations that form the tramlines on which this wine delivers its message with tireless accuracy. And then you notice that something is missing. Unlike virtually every other mesmeric Mourvèdre on earth, oak is seemingly missing. Of course, this is an illusion because behind every cache of flavour molecules sits a silent oak nuance, hidden from view but doing the covert task of adding grandeur and detail without craving any credit. This is another jaw-dropping wine, and it stands a chance of running a longer race than the 2021, too, so be sure to secure your stock." Matthew Jukes

98 points - "The second iteration of this wine (tasted pre-release), which is quickly rising to icon status in Swinney’s portfolio. Tiny production from bushvines, the fruit is harvested in three passes wild fermented in whole bunches and matured in old oak. Currently tightly wound and holding its cards close to its chest, its starry journey ahead is clear. Vibrant, densely knit dark black plum aromas with a jewel-like clarity, along with violets, star anise, eucalypt, heady ferrous notes and crushed earth. Tannins might be tight and bunched up in their youth, but they are chalky and fine in structure, and the long line of delicate acidity helps deliver waves of flavour long after the last sip. Complex, vivacious and nuanced; a new Mourvèdre benchmark has been set." - Cassandra Charlick (Decanter)

Swinney

The Swinney family's roots in Frankland River stretch back over 100 years.

George John Alexander Swinney was a pioneer of the region, settling a grazing property in Franklands in 1922. Today the property is run by fourth generation brother and sister, Matt and Janelle Swinney. They are taking the family property into great new territory.

Bush vines litter the property. Riesling, Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre are fining a very happy home on the ironstone slopes above the Frankland River.

Now, with Rhys Thomas as viticulturist and vineyard manager since 2021, and sixth generation winemaker Rob Mann crafting the wines in the cellar, this label is on track to become one of the regional benchmarks in short order.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
