Heidi Schröck has managed her family’s 10-hectare estate in Rust, Burgenland since 1983. Located five miles from the Hungarian border, her vineyards benefit from extra sunlight hours due to their south-east facing position along Lake Neusiedl. The soils are a mix of sand, clay, gravel, quartz, and schist. With her twin sons, Heidi sustainably cultivates Austrian varieties like Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch, and St Laurent, and revives traditional varieties like Furmint.
The fruit for Junge Löwen comes from the Ruster vineyard on Rust Hill. The sandy loam soil contains mica schist and gneiss, and vines are trained in the Guyot simple method. Sustainable viticulture practices are used, avoiding herbicides and insecticides, and encouraging local cover crops.
Grapes are hand-harvested and destemmed. Blaufränkisch ferments in stainless steel, while St. Laurent ferments in an open vessel, punched down by hand. After two weeks of fermentation and pressing, the wines undergo malolactic fermentation in a 10-year-old Austrian oak barrel, then age for 10 months before bottling.
Junge Löwen is ruby red with aromas of cherry, black pepper, leather, and fine tobacco. It has a minerality from the schisty soils, a medium body, vibrant character, smooth tannins, and an elegant finish.
