Description

Another cracking release of this unique and wonderful Australian Riesling.

With ruthless grape sorting, wild ferment in the Foudre, extended time on skins and plenty of lees stirring, this Riesling is all about texture and complexity. But the thing that sets this majestic Riesling apart is the searing acid backbone which drives the wine from beginning to end.

This is one of Best's more limited release wines and is never made in large amounts, but it consistently finds itself amongst the finest Rieslings in Victoria.

Enjoy the ride.

"So much zing and energy. So good."

95 Points - "There's a gorgeousness to these wines. There's a touch of sweetness to the lime- and orange-driven fruit, a modest textural element, an impression of exquisite purity throughout. It feels and tasty lovely, first sip to the last. The acidity feels daring but it's flavour-drenched, and that's the crucial point. In short, everything is in excellent order here." - Campbell Mattinson (Halliday Wine Companion)

95 Points - "The 2022 Foudre Ferment Riesling is mouthfilling and complete, with layers of bath salts, lime blossoms, custard, cheesecloth, Golden Delicious apples, nashi pears, a hint of lychee and a waft of rose petal. There are also notes of beeswax and florals in texture and character. In the mouth, the fruit is punctuated by a scintillating score of acidity that invigorates the tongue and lights up the flavors like a pinball machine. This is sensational. It's from an epic pocket of Victoria. 12% alcohol, sealed under screw cap." - Erin Larkin (Halliday Wine Companion)

94 Points - "Aged in 2500 litre Austrian foudre. Intense and juicy flavour. Lime juice, apple pie, almond and peach tea, with a spicy cinnamon and white flower overlay, and a subtle petrol note. It’s zesty and packed with flavour, a real mouth-watering affair of honey and lime juice and lemon zest, a chalky pucker of phenolic grip, and a jasmine tea and apricot finish of excellent length and chalky texture. So much zing and energy. So good." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

92 Points - "Fresh, restrained, delicate aromas of flowers while the palate is certainly different in feel—full and ample with an impression of sweetness, with generous up-front riesling flavour. No oak flavour to speak of but the barrel effect adds fullness to the palate and opens it up" - Huon Hook (Real Review)

    Excellent Australian Riesling

Bought this wine based on being the Halliday wine of the year and was not disappointed. Fresh and dry. Excellent value for money. Wish I had picked a few more bottles! Interesting to see where this wine goes with some age on it.

The nexus of value and quality

This is a superb wine. The acidity and structure of Riesling with the richness and roundness of a fine Chablis. Will no doubt be sold out by the time someone reads this review, but it should stand as a testament to future iterations.

    2021 Bests Foudre Ferment Riesling

    An unusual Aussie riesling.

    Needs food.

Surprised it was awarded Halliday wine of the year! I think this was because of it being so rare.

I prefer the unoaked riesling style, with no skins in the ferment.

The aromatic Riesling juice is given extended skin contact then wild fermented in a large French oak foudre (barrel) made by the famous cooper Marc Grenier. The resultant wine exhibits both the complexities of a barrel ferment and spontaneous fermentation without the overt oak flavour, due to the large size and subtlety of the foudre.

This wine is a representation of another facet of Riesling's charms. Displaying complex aromatic honeyed richness with texture and acidity to balance, it is the ideal accompaniment to stinky and creamy cheeses.

Best's Great Western

Best's Great Western is one of the oldest family-owned wineries in the country.

Their iconic Nursery Block is home to some of the oldest clonal material for particular varieties that can be found anywhere in the world. Established in the late 1860s, this precious vineyard is envied by much of the wine growing world.

Their wines are consistently excellent: the Shiraz dark and powerful, the Rieslings full flavoured and impeccably balanced, and the rare releases of Old Vine Meunier and Thomson Family Shiraz are some of the most collectable red wines in the country.

The Thomson family, and the Best family before them, have given us one of the true treasures of the Australian wine scene.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
