Description

Named after the ancient Roman fortifications near the Torbreck forest in Scotland, The Gask is a pure expression of high-altitude Eden Valley Shiraz. While the Barossa floor is known for its weight, these elevated, rocky sites produce fruit with a tighter structure and a much cooler aromatic profile. The 2024 vintage, defined by a calm spring and an idyllic summer, has produced a version of The Gask that is particularly fragrantly spiced this year, one of the best in a few years we think.

In the cellar, Torbreck keeps the focus on site typicity: small open-top fermenters, basket pressing, and 18 months in seasoned French oak. By avoiding new wood, the natural granite-like minerality of the Eden Valley is allowed to take center stage.

The wine is deep crimson in the glass, with immediate aromas of wild blueberries, mulberries, and boysenberries. What makes The Gask distinct is the secondary layer of violets, potpourri, and sandalwood, all woven through a stony, graphite-like core. The palate is plush but held in place by a line of fresh acidity and soft, polished tannins. It’s a heroic style of Shiraz that manages to remain elegant and nimble - a sophisticated Shiraz for Barossa die-hards.

97 points - "The 2024 The Gask hails from the Eden Valley—one of my favorite places in this beautiful region—and it leads with graphite, jasmine tea, blueberry, raspberry, pomegranate and shale. The fruit from here brings with it a shiny polish, a glittery sort of profile, while being underpinned at all times by a profusion of earthy, savory tannins. I love this contrast that this growing area can provide. It has power and detail, freshness and depth. This is excellent. 15% alcohol, sealed under natural cork." - Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

95 points - "Very deep, saturated purple-red colour with understated but plum and graphite shiraz aromas that lead into a palate of good concentration and abundant tannins, albeit with smoothly rounded edges. A hint of dark chocolate. Fleshy, ample and long-lasting on the palate. Impressive potential: just needs more time for the full payoff." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

The lead up to the 2024 harvest saw timely spring rainfall and calm conditions for flowering and fruit set. A mild to warm summer was idyllic, propelling even growth and fruit development. A warm early summer brought on shiraz showing bright colours and fragrance, persisting for several weeks accelerating to powerful dark fruit and fragrantly spiced characteristics.

A cooler break mid-April allowed grenache and mataro vineyards to develop deep colours and firm tannins. With harvest concluding on the 19th of April, we are extremely pleased with the strength and diversity of wines made from the 2024 season.
Winemaking
The Gask is a Shiraz sourced from elevated, cooler-climate sites along the upper reaches of the Eden Valley. These higher-altitude vineyards produce fruit with pronounced aromatics, refined structure, and natural acidity. The hand-harvested grapes are fermented in small open-top fermenters. Following basket pressing, the wine is matured in seasoned French oak barriques for 18.

Bottled unfined and unfiltered, The Gask offers a perfumed, finely structured expression of cool-climate Barossa Shiraz.
Tasting Note
Deep crimson with dark Aubergine core. Blue and purple fruits are immediate on the nose with aromas such as wild blueberries, mulberries and boysenberries. Theres an intriguing graphite and granite like minerality interwoven across secondary notes such as violets, potpourri, cedar and sandalwood. The palate is plush and envelopes the cool blue fruit flavours alongside soft round tannins and lengthy acidity that rounds out the polished textural mouthfeel. A wine that is so easy to enjoy in its youth but will cellar for 10 years. Enjoy with BBQ meats like rib eye or grilled Italian sausage. Ready from 2025. Serve at 16C.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
