Description

Luke Lambert’s Syrah is a masterclass in restraint. Much like the man who makes it, it's a wine that's complex and nuanced rather than out-and-out power. The fruit comes from the sunnier western side of the Denton Hill, where thin soils and low yields give naturally concentrated berries.

In 2024, Lambert worked with 80% whole bunches, each ferment foot-stomped by Rosalind to gently burst the skins, coaxing perfume and texture from every berry. The wine was raised in a large, neutral French oak foudre to keep the fruit and site at the centre of the story.

It’s an especially expressive release and the richest of the last 4 years in our opinion: violet, blueberry and a smoky, lifted spice on the nose; juicy blue and black fruits on the palate, threaded with orange rind, anise and a dusting of tannin so fine it’s almost suede-like. There’s muscle in the wine, but it’s reined in by Lambert’s feather-light touch. The balance is spot-on, the detail precise, and the finish lingers long after the glass is empty.

This is Yarra Valley Syrah at its most elegant, and proof again why Luke Lambert remains one of Australia’s most compelling winemakers of his generation.

    So long Syrah

Loved it! This is outstanding, and in perfect Syrah style.

The Syrah vines grow on the sunnier western side of Denton towards the top of the slope, where soil is thin and yields are low. This year, 80% whole bunches were included. In the crucial early days of vinification, Rosalind foot stomps the ferments three times a day to ensure each berry is quickly but gently popped, maximising the juice’s exposure to skins and stalks. Ferments are fast, and the wine is promptly pressed, settled and racked to neutral 5000-litre French oak foudre for maturation.

Following three cool seasons, the new release is ringing with scents of violet, blueberry and smoky lift. The palate channels the muscle of the vintage, wonderfully harnessed by Lambert’s artisanal winemaking. It’s generous and detailed with cosy, juicy-sweet blue fruits laced with orange rind, violet and aniseed perfume; everything is neatly folded into shape by fine acidity and lingering, silky tannins. It’s a radiant Lambert Syrah that will appeal to acolytes and newcomers alike.

Lambert Wines

Luke Lambert is one of Australia’s most instinctive winemakers, known for pure, site-driven Chardonnay, Syrah and Nebbiolo from granite-rich Yarra Valley vineyards. His philosophy is simple: let the vineyard lead, keep the winemaking minimal, and preserve the connection between glass and place.

A long-time admirer of Piedmont’s greats, Lambert has made Nebbiolo his calling card, crafting Australia’s benchmark example from Denton Vineyard since 2008. In 2017, he and partner Rosalind Hall planted Sparkletown, a steep, rocky amphitheatre dedicated entirely to Nebbiolo, with the first release still years away.

Everything is done with restraint — hand-picking, wild fermentation, long macerations, large old oak, no fining or filtration. “I’m just trying to make something beautiful,” Lambert says. The result is wines of clarity, perfume and quiet power that have made him one of the most respected names in Australian wine.
