Description

This is only the second time Bryan Martin has bottled a straight Syrah from his estate vineyard, and it’s one for the purists. No Viognier, no whole bunches - just pristine Shiraz fruit handled with patience and restraint.

The wine was fermented as whole berries, left on skins for an extended six weeks, then pressed to a single new Taransaud puncheon. Two years in barrel has given it polish and depth without drowning out the fruit.

It’s a different voice to the more perfumed Shiraz Viognier Ravensworth is known for - darker, more savoury, with fine tannins and real structure. Think black fruits, spice, a touch of earth, and a long, measured finish.

Made in tiny quantities (just 60 dozen), this is a rare and thoughtful expression of Canberra District Shiraz - one that will reward a decade or more in the cellar, but already shows the precision and finesse that defines Bryan’s wines.

It has the wash and slosh of the season but there’s plenty of attractive, dark fruit, woody spice, sweet earth, truffle and peppery elements here. There’s dashes of mint and eucalyptus too, a touch of tomato leaf, wet herbs. It’s pleasing in its way, a shimmy of light tannins help things along. All up, of the season, a softness and ease of drinking.

Second time we've made a small batch of Shiraz (Syrah) without bunches or viognier. One for the purist.

Gently fermented as whole-berries and macerated for 6 weeks then pressed to 100% new oak (Taransaud TBSPN puncheon) and matured for two years.

Harvest date: 17th April
Processing: Processed to whole berries with no bunches. Gentle daily plunging daily. Left on-skins for 8 weeks. Pressed to one new Taransaud 500l Puncheon. Matured for two years thus.
Élevage: 2 years
Vessels: Taransaud Puncheon (Select Pinot)

Another cool year, very wet early that kept us on our toes in the vineyard. Was a year for patience, faith and gumboots.
Bottling date: May 2025
Production: 60 dozen
Cellaring: 10 years plus
Something interesting: Leaving the viognier and whole-bunches out of the fermentation allows for a longer maceration. 100% new oak is possible due to the type of barrel not being to oaky.
Drink with: Lamb heavily flavoured with middle-eastern spices and herbs.

Ravensworth

Bryan Martin is one of the most creative and inquisitive winemakers we've ever met. After leaving his position as winemaker alongside Tim Kirk at Canberra regional flagbearer, Clonakilla, Bryan went full steam in on his own label Ravensworth, which has firmly hit cult status amongst collectors.

He and his wife Jocelyn have a beautiful property outside of Murrumbateman which is home to all of their excellent Estate wines and Bryan also searches surrounding vineyards and out to the Hilltops region to compile his excellent value Regional series of wines. Sustainability and an unwavering commitment to quality across the board underpin the entire operation at Ravensworth. Perhaps best known for his benchmark Shiraz Viognier and textural Rieslings, Bryan is also arguably the country's best producer of Sangiovese and is a true master of the dark art of skin-contact whites.

Bryan embodies everything we love about small artisanal Australian producers. He is humble, irreverent, committed to the pursuit of excellence and always looking to explore. Quite simply, if you see a Ravensworth wine anywhere, you should buy it.
