Maretti have offered insane value with their Piemonte wines for years. Their Barolo is predictably exceptional value in the context of the region.

Description

Produced by the winemaker behind the famed wines of Mirafiore and Fontanafredda, the Maretti label has signified exceptional value from Piedmont since it was first imported to Australia.

Unsurprisingly, given this producer's incredible track record for over-delivering for the price, the Barolo comes in at a very modest price when compared to the rest of the region.

It's classically styled, too. A sea of red fruit, licorice, orange peel and fine, dusty tannin that will continue to evolve in bottle for the next decade plus.

"A classic expression, the alluring bouquet shows ripe cherry, fine leather, dried flower, star anise, and toasted nut aromas. The concentrated palate exhibits fine flow and outstanding persistence, superbly complemented by refined texture and layers of grainy tannins, making it firm and sturdy with a sustained, grippy finish. At its best: now to 2035."

    Yum

This was a great wine for a great price. All the Barolo goodness, just not the Barolo price.

    Value for money Barolo

Very good value compared with other Barolo's. Doesnt match the higher priced offerings for quality, but out paces the majority of Langhe neb at a similar price point. Dark chocolate on back palette and fine grippy tannins.

    Value for Money

A good value for money purchase.

Lean, clean. An unexpected (slight) peppery finish on the palate.

Winemaking:
The fermentation is traditional (15 days) in stainless steel vats with a floating cap at a controlled temperature (30-31° C). The must then stays in contact with the skins for a further 15 days to optimize the extraction of the polyphenolic substances and help start malolactic fermentation. One year in barriques from Allier and two year in oak casks still from Allier (2000 lt). After a soft clarification, the wine is bottled for a further period of maturation in the bottle, the length depends from the characteristics of the vintages, but never less than 12 months.

Tasting Note:
The colour is dark garnet with ruby highlights. It has a clear-cut, intense nose with overtones of roses, spices, earthy undertones with nuanced vanilla notes. The taste is dry, but soft, full-bodied, velvety and well balanced, and is very long-lasting. Classic Barolo like this works well with rich braised meat dishes or a mushroom risotto.
